Glowworms

The Science & the Magic

A once-in-a-
lifetime phenomenon.

“Female glow worms glow a fluorescent green to attract males as they lay their eggs β€” lighting up the ocean surface around the boat.”

On the 3rd, 4th and 5th day after the full moon, and around 55 minutes after the sunset, the glow worms come up to the surface and put on a bioluminescent show.

For most of their lives, glow worms live unseen on the ocean floor. Three nights a month, however, they rise for their mating event β€” and the sea comes alive with fluorescent green light. Female glow worms glow to attract males as they lay their eggs.

We’ve been running this tour for over 30 years. Our crew knows exactly where to go and when β€” so you never miss the show.

How It Works

The bioluminescence explained.

πŸŒ•

Lunar Triggered

The phenomenon is triggered by the lunar cycle β€” rising on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th night after each full moon. Our crew times the departure precisely so you’re on the water when it happens.

πŸ’š

Fluorescent Green Glow

Female glow worms emit a vivid fluorescent green bioluminescence to attract males during their mating event β€” creating the dancing lights you’ll see all around the boat.

🌊

~55 Minutes After Sunset

The worms begin to surface approximately 55 minutes after sunset. We depart at exactly the right time to ensure you’re in position when they appear β€” never too early, never too late.

In the rare event conditions aren’t right, we will do everything possible to reschedule your trip.

We depart from Leeward Marina in Providenciales. Full directions and parking information are included in your booking confirmation.

A light jacket or layer is recommended β€” it can be cool on the water at night. Bring a phone or camera if you’d like to try to photograph the bioluminescence. Drinks and snacks are provided throughout the tour.

Absolutely β€” children love this tour. Children aged 2–12 are $60. The Atabeyra is a large, stable, and spacious vessel and the evening is relaxed and appropriate for all ages.

Yes, though bioluminescence can be tricky to capture on standard smartphone cameras in low light. A camera with good low-light or long-exposure capability will give better results. Our crew can offer tips on the night.
